Is it really the thought that counts when it comes to gift giving?

For example, you love candles and a friend gives you a lovely set of aromatherapy candles. You later find out that she got them for free from a relative who makes them. Does this make the gift worth less to you?

Or you get a handmade gift from an adult (folded origami stars of diff colors in a glass vase, or folded paper ornament). Is this thoughtful, or is it just cheap?

How about if you get a gift that was regifted, but it’s something that really suits you (a sweater in a flattering color) and clearly not something that was passed on just because the original recipient didn’t like it? Does the fact that the giver didn’t buy it cheapen the gesture for you?

“For example, you love candles and a friend gives you a lovely set of aromatherapy candles. You later find out that she got them for free from a relative who makes them. Does this make the gift worth less to you?”

-Absolutely not. The friend could have just kept them for themself but instead chose to give them to you. It’s definitely a generous thought.

“Or you get a handmade gift from an adult (folded origami stars of diff colors in a glass vase, or folded paper ornament). Is this thoughtful, or is it just cheap?”

-It’s thoughtful. This person put forth lots of effort to craft something with their own hands for you. This is much warmer than simply shelling out a few bucks for a meaningless object off a store shelf.

-No. The person merely saw a better use for an item they couldn’t use. The fact that they considered you and not a charity who deserveds clothing more is a thoughtful gesture.
