Please help- insomnia and depression?
Hi, I’ve had depression for over three years now. I find it really difficult to get off to sleep. Last night I kept taking Nytol tablets to try to get some rest but I ended up taking so many that I felt really ill, my heart was racing and it was really unpleasant. I’ve recently given up smoking and also given up alcohol altogether. None of the doctors I have seen take me seriously, even though I’ve been hospitalised for depression and suicide attempts several times now. I just feel like everything is totally hopeless. I try my best to do the right thing, but I can’t keep going on like this. I feel absolutely desperate. Life seems one long continuous struggle with no rest as sleep eludes me, even though I exercise a great deal and walk long distances. Please advise anything that will help me, I have tried herbal remedies, camomile tea, aromatherapy, milky drinks before bedtime, a bubble bath, CBT, RET and NLP and I am really at my wit’s end now.
I’m sorry to hear about your suffering. Mental illness, especially depression can take a serious toll on your sleep patterns. Have you been prescribed anti-depressants? It seems like you’re talking about medical doctors, and those are not the ones taking you seriously. I would recommend seeing a psychologist who specializes in clinical therapy. They will take your problems seriously. I have worked with many closely as a psychology undergrad. That’s how I discovered I didn’t want to go into clinical psychology. It’s truly hard work because I take other’s pain and suffering too personal. Please see a specialist, I would hate it if you were to be successful in one of your suicide attempts. There’s so much to live for and there’s people in this world who would miss you. If you were gone, I would have never gotten a chance to answer this question.

Trying to have happy thoughts all on your own won’t help much because many times depression is a combination of a chemical imbalance in your brain, your personality and the things that happen to you in life. My life really sucks but I have a very upbeat personality, so it’s a buffer for me. You might not have the same buffer. Don’t listen and feel bad about the comments people make about you being at fault for feeling the way you do.
I’m sorry I keep adding stuff but I’m reading other answers and they just anger me because the advise is not always good for everyone. My mother is a very devout, fundamentalist christian. Even her, with her god in one hand and jesus on the other couldn’t battle depression without the help of a therapist. Thankfully she didn’t need drugs, but sometimes those are helpful. I know many christians who are strong in their faith but still suffer from depression.
