What is Aromatherapy?
Even among skeptics of alternative medicine, it’s difficult to underestimate the body’s ability to naturally put aside that which ails it once it has a chance to get into a state of well-being. It’s amazing how much the way we feel in our minds can reflect itself upon the way we feel, and the practice of aromatherapy seeks to promote just that. The general idea is to put yourself into as peaceful and environment as possible, perhaps with some extremely light music, and slowly burn the essences of various types of plants.
The vapors are not harmful, and the smoke itself has no extraneous effects on the body. You will not get “high,” for example, through the use of aromatherapy unless you are simply burning the wrong kinds of plants. After all, that isn’t the point of this type of treatment. Often, exotic flowers such as lilac or lavender are used, but one of the most common burning elements of aromatherapy is incense. Incense is popular, and the use of it to promote a state of well being dates back to the time of ancient monks, who used an early form of aromatherapy to quiet their minds in order to assist them with their meditation. This is a principle that is remained largely unchanged throughout the ages. In order for aromatherapy to be its most effective, you must choose to burn something that generates a smell you find to your liking. It’s also important not to burn it too aggressively; you only want the aroma of the burning essence to fill the room, but without making the air thick with smoke. Inhaling the volatile vapors over time will promote a euphoric sense of peace, and will allow you to have a much easier time coping with the stresses of day-to-day life.
In many cases, experience users of aromatherapy blends says on burning only the natural oils of plants. The reasoning behind this is that these natural oils, when imbibed into the body through the lungs, can have a much more profound effect on its positive well-being than simply filling the mind with a positive euphoria. While simply “feeling good” can go a long way toward relieving stress, which is undoubtedly a culprit in the poor health of a great many people, many advocates of aromatherapy say that the idea behind it goes much deeper than that. The organic chemicals that naturally occur in the vapors that are let off by these oils to have a wide variety of effects on the mind, including promoting better concentration and focus, or encouraging a stronger memory.
A perfect example of a naturally scented oil that can generate an effect like this would be peppermint, which many public schools have even taken to passing out to students before difficult tests, in order to help to improve their concentration. Many would argue that this is a much more effective approach than simply using medication designed to target hyperactivity disorders, which often cause more problems than they solve. A successful aroma therapist will be able to determine which effects are the most needed, and use that information to select the most appropriate scent for their own life. In this sense, aromatherapy is a gateway for bringing one’s life back into clear focus and balance.
